One Step In, Empowered Women Out

We moved from cultural dance to practical training in housekeeping and gardening; each session part of our ongoing commitment to celebrating culture, strengthening skills, practical learning, and creating real opportunities for women in our community.

What started with Giriama dancing quickly evolved into hands-on housekeeping and gardening training — a full-circle moment of honoring tradition while building capacity for the future.

These sessions are not just activities; they are part of our ongoing commitment to:
– Strengthen local skills
– Support women’s economic empowerment
– Build spaces where culture and opportunity meet
– Create sustainable pathways for community growth

Learning the Malta Corner

During the housekeeping training, Careen introduced our Kirepwe ladies to the Malta Corner — a simple but essential bed-making technique that elevates professionalism and attention to detail, and, unexpectedly, became the source of our afternoon laughs.

Flora even joked that she’ll never be able to sleep on a bed that isn’t “malta’d” again. (Now we’re all wondering… what is the origin of that name?)

Gardening Basics That Make a Big Difference

In our gardening session, the Kirepwe ladies learned a key principle:
never place manure directly on the plant — instead, apply it around the plant so the roots can slowly absorb the nutrients, and cover with dried grass.

This application of mulching is to conserve soil moisture, reduce weeds, keep the soil cool to avoid erosion, and add nutrients back into the earth as it decomposes. This simple technique is foundational for anyone growing food, herbs, or flowers sustainably.

We believe community is the lifestyle of the future — and we are part of the shift.

Growing together, not just gathering.
Learning together, not just teaching.
Building systems of support, dignity, and opportunity, not just surviving.

We’d love for you to join us — and if you know any women who would thrive in a supportive, skill-building community, please let them know that our doors are open and they are warmly welcome.

As we rise, we also invite you to support the women in our community by exploring the Wana Mwanga Shop and discovering what they have created with their hands, their talent, and their courage.
